"Underappreciated in London yet clearly a class act, pianist-composer Watkis took himself to New York last spring and managed to cut an impressive debut album there, Straight Ahead - Ride for Tone (Blue Soundscape Records) with an all-star cast including altoist Steve Wilson, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Lewis Nash. Not many British musicians could command musical support of that calibre, yet with no corporate muscle behind him there was no album-launch tour for Watkis, just a few selective quintet gigs under his leadership both here and in New York. Quality will out, however, and it's only a matter of time before such hip writing and playing, in an attractive contemporary line that follows the late, great Kenny Kirkland, takes its rightful place on the London scene. This could be Trevor's breakthrough year" - Jack Massarik, London Evening Standard.
